WaterRower
By the Watta Team · Updated March 2026
What is WaterRower?
The WaterRower is a distinctive rowing machine that uses a paddle spinning in a water-filled tank to generate resistance. As you row harder, the paddle moves faster through the water, creating progressively more resistance — mimicking the feel of an oar in water. WaterRowers are known for their attractive wooden construction (typically American ash or oak), quiet operation, and compact upright storage. The resistance feel differs from air-resistance machines like the Concept2: the catch feels lighter, the drive builds progressively, and the overall sensation is smoother. However, WaterRower metrics are not directly comparable to Concept2 metrics because the resistance mechanisms are fundamentally different.
How Watta Uses WaterRower
Watta is built for the Concept2 ecosystem and does not currently support WaterRower machines. The AI OCR is trained to read the Concept2 PM5 monitor. WaterRower users looking for erg tracking should use the WaterRower Connect companion app or consider a Concept2 for access to Watta's analytics.
