Training Volume

What is Training Volume?
Training volume quantifies how much work a rower does over a specific timeframe — usually a week. It can be expressed as total metres (e.g., 80,000m per week), total minutes (e.g., 600 minutes per week), or number of sessions (e.g., 8 sessions per week). Volume is the single most important training variable for developing aerobic fitness in rowing. Elite rowers may accumulate 200,000+ metres per week, while recreational rowers typically train 30,000-80,000m per week. The key principle is that volume should increase gradually (no more than 10% per week) and be periodised — building over 3-4 week blocks before a recovery week at reduced load. Most training volume (80-85%) should be at low intensity (UT2/steady state) to build the aerobic engine without accumulating excessive fatigue.
How Watta Uses Training Volume
Watta tracks your total metres and sessions over time, giving you a clear picture of your weekly and monthly training volume. By logging every erg session, you can identify volume trends, spot sudden spikes that might lead to overtraining, and ensure your progressive overload is gradual and sustainable.
