Force Curve: The force curve is a graph on the Concept2 PM5 that shows how much force you apply to the handle during each stroke, used to diagnose rowing technique.

What is Force Curve?

The force curve is a real-time graphical display on the Concept2 PM5 showing how force is applied during the drive phase of each stroke. The x-axis represents the drive from catch to finish, and the y-axis represents the force applied. An ideal force curve has a smooth, bell-shaped profile — rapid force application at the catch, peak force in the middle third of the drive, and a gradual taper to the finish. Common technique issues visible on the force curve include: a slow start (weak catch), a double peak (opening back too early), or a sharp drop (collapsing at the finish). Coaches use the force curve as a diagnostic tool because it reveals stroke mechanics that are difficult to observe visually. By learning to read your force curve, you can connect technique changes directly to power output and efficiency.

How Watta Uses Force Curve

While Watta does not currently capture the force curve graphic, the stroke rate and watts-per-stroke metrics it does capture provide insight into rowing economy. The Economy component of the Effort Score (10% weight) rewards efficient power production, which correlates with good force curve mechanics.
