10K Erg Time Predictor

By the Watta Team · Updated March 2026

The 10K erg time predictor estimates your 10,000-metre rowing ergometer performance from a shorter distance result using Paul's Law. The 10K is one of the most popular endurance tests on the Concept2, requiring sustained aerobic output for 35-45 minutes at competitive levels. Because the 10K relies heavily on aerobic capacity, predictions from shorter tests carry inherent uncertainty — they assume a similar aerobic-to-anaerobic contribution ratio. The calculator applies a pace degradation exponent of 0.04, which models how pace decays as distance increases on the erg. Results are most accurate when predicting from distances of 2,000m or longer.

How This Works

Enter a known distance and your time for that distance. The calculator computes your average pace (seconds per metre), then applies Paul's Law with a 0.04 degradation exponent: predicted time = known pace × 10000 × (10000/known distance)^0.04. This models the empirical observation that erg pace slows by roughly 5-6% when doubling distance. The output shows your predicted 10K total time and average 500m split.

Formula

Predicted time = (known time / known distance) × 10000 × (10000 / known distance)^0.04

Examples

A rower with a 7:00 2K time

Predicted 10K time is approximately 37:17, with an average split of about 1:51.9/500m.

A rower with a 19:30 5K time

Predicted 10K time is approximately 39:47, with an average split of about 1:59.4/500m.

An elite rower with a 6:00 2K time

Predicted 10K time is approximately 31:55, with an average split of about 1:35.8/500m.
